Richard Nantchengwa's journey to entrepreneurial success

Richard Nantchengwa, who comes from traditional authority Jenala in Phalombe district, is showing the public that hard work and support can achieve something with help from programmes like the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) that has transformed his aspirations into tangible achievements.

"The Most Significant Change that has happened in my life is the realisation of my potential to create change within my community," Richard reflects with a sense of pride.

With the guidance of the GALS, he set his sights on economic empowerment, recognizing the transformative power of entrepreneurship starting with a modest investment: three goats and a plot of land.

"I saw an opportunity to make a difference," Richard explains. "I wanted to create something sustainable, something that would not only benefit me but also contribute to the growth and development of my community."

He said he diversified his investments, leveraging his shares from the village loan and savings group known as Banki Mkhonde to kick-start his entrepreneurial venture.

"Positive Youth Development (PYD) played a crucial role in shaping my mindset. It instilled in me the importance of perseverance and resilience, empowering me to overcome challenges and pursue my goals relentlessly," he said.

Richard said he want to build an Agro-dealer shop on the plot of land he has bought visualizing a hub where farmers could access quality crop seedlings and agricultural inputs.

"I believe in the potential of agriculture to drive economic growth," Richard stresses. "By providing farmers with access to high-quality seedlings and agricultural supplies, I am not only fostering productivity but also empowering individuals to improve their livelihoods."

As Richard's Agro-dealer shop takes shape, his impact resonates throughout the community. Farmers will find solace in knowing they have a reliable source for their agricultural needs while he inspires a new wave of entrepreneurship among the youth from Jenala.

"I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way," Richard reflects, "but my journey is far from over. I am committed to continuous growth and innovation, always determined to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me,” he concluded.

With support from USAID, Phalombe Youth Arms Organisation implemented the GALS programme through Propel Health project.
